5 Fun Facts About Forklifts
Just about everything you own was transported by a forklift at one point or another. Whether it’s a cherry picker, reach truck, pallet jack, or a standard issue lift, every warehouse in the world utilizes them on a daily basis. Without them, the supply lines that keep the world moving would cease to exist. But how much do you really know about these amazing machines?
Today we are going to discuss five fun facts about the forklifts that keep the world moving:
Forklift jobs are super popular
There are over 1.5 million forklift operators in the United States alone. These are often high paying roles and are highly desired among warehouse workers. In the US, these roles can range from entry level positions, to careers that earn upwards of $30/hour in some regions.
There are many different types of forklifts
The average forklift has a capacity of at least 3,000 pounds; however, the world record capacity lifted by a forklift is 90 tons. That’s enough to move around roughly 20 full grown elephants. Not all of them are that extreme, but the general working capacity requires a minimum of 3,000 pounds and an average of 5,000 pounds.
Forklifts are expensive!
A brand new electric forklift with standard capacity will set you back anywhere from $25 to $45 thousand dollars. For an internal combustion forklift, it can run up to $50k. These are the most prized pieces of equipment in a warehouse environment, so companies invest heavily in ensuring that they have the tools to get their work done safely and efficiently.
Forklifts are commonly stolen
While they are handy for helping businesses move materials, they are also handy for helping people steal things. There have been reports of forklifts being used to steal ATMs, as well as rush-hour pursuits chasing after stolen forklifts.
Forklifts can save your life
When used properly and with the correct training, forklifts allow warehouses to operate safely and prevent life threatening injuries. In previous eras, warehouses ranged from operating with primitive forklifts to moving materials without the assistance of a forklift whatsoever. Injuries were much more common and the evolution of forklifts have prevented countless injuries.
