A Day in the Life of Derek Chambers: From Military Precision to IT Support
Meet Derek Chambers, an IT Support Specialist at Accurate Personnel’s Corporate South location. Derek has been with Accurate for just over a year, having joined the team on June 19, 2023. With a passion for technology and a background in military communications, Derek is the go-to guy when your tech starts acting like it has a mind of its own.
Every morning, Derek kicks off his day with a simple yet crucial ritual: restarting his computer. “I restart my computer every morning and look at the tickets that are open or came in overnight,” he says, citing a need to see what tickets came in overnight and to get a sense of the day ahead. This routine allows him to reset his systems and prepare for whatever challenges await.
Derek dives into a queue of open tickets, resolving issues ranging from minor glitches to urgent requests. His military background has instilled in him a deep understanding of the importance of prioritization and efficiency—skills that serve him well in the fast-paced world of IT support.
Speaking about how his military experience shapes his approach to work, Derek went on to mention that, “it allows me to prioritize what is vital to the company’s needs and must be resolved immediately. Everything is a Process and has an order to it that it must be done in, step by step.”
His military service has also profoundly shaped his work ethic. “It’s always best to be proactive,” he advises. “Educate yourself, train, and be prepared for the unexpected.” This invaluable lesson translates directly to his role at Accurate Personnel, allowing him to anticipate challenges before they arise. “If you are early, then you are on time,” adds Chambers. “If you are just on time? Then you are already late.”
Reflecting on his time in the service, he recalls fixing radios and setting up communications systems, which mirrors his current work in IT. “I was fixing Radios, Computers, and setting up Commo Systems, so it is similar to that time during my service,” he shares.
When the day gets hectic, Derek’s secret weapon is a steady supply of coffee. Alongside his favorite brews, he tunes into Amazon Music for a bit of motivation, often jamming out to Metallica’s “No Leaf Clover.” The right playlist can make all the difference when you’re solving tech problems and juggling support tickets. Chambers jokes, “I had to go with my second favorite song. My favorite is not appropriate.”
Outside of his IT duties, Derek has a creative side that surprises many of his colleagues: he enjoys restoring antique furniture. His current project? A 200-year-old roll top desk for his wife. It serves as a great way to unwind, proving that he can fix both modern tech and vintage treasures.
When asked if he would swap jobs with anyone in the company for a day, Derek's answer is a resounding no. “I love what I do and wouldn’t trade it for anything,” said Chambers. This passion shines through in his interactions with colleagues and his commitment to providing top-notch IT support.
As we approach Veterans Day, it’s important to recognize the dedication and skills that veterans like Derek bring to the workplace. His military experience has not only equipped him with technical expertise but also instilled a strong sense of duty and camaraderie. Derek Chambers is a valuable asset to the Accurate Personnel team, blending his technical skills with a proactive mindset and a sense of humor. Whether he’s tackling a complex tech issue or working on his latest restoration project, Derek approaches each day with enthusiasm and dedication.
Although Derek doesn’t usually share photos from his service days, he made an exception to provide this one of himself in uniform:
Accurate Personnel is proud to extend our heartfelt thanks to Derek and all veterans for their dedicated service to our country!
